1. союз (+ личн. формы глагола; в разн. знач.) that (+ should + inf. + subjunctive I уст., амер.); (при обозначении цели — с оттенком возможности) (so) that (+ may + inf.); in order that (+ may + inf.; ср. ниже)

необходимо, чтобы они имели это — it is necessary that they should have it; they must have it

невозможно, чтобы он сказал это — it is impossible that he should have said that; he could not possibly have said that

они предложили, чтобы он прочёл письмо — they suggested that he should read, или that he read, the letter

он говорил громко, чтобы все они слышали его слова — he spoke loud (so) that all of them might hear his words

он хотел, сказал (им), приказал (им), попросил (их) и т. п., чтобы они сделали это — he wanted, told, ordered, asked, etc., them to do it

чтобы ... не — that ... not (+ may + inf.); lest (+ should + inf.)

чтобы он не забыл — that he may not forget; lest he should forget

на том, о том и т. п., чтобы = чтобы:

он настаивает на том, чтобы они были приглашены — he insists that they should be invited; he insists on their being invited

так, чтобы — so that (+ may + inf.)

для того, чтобы — in order that (+ may + inf.)

2. как частица (+ инф.) in order (+ to inf.), или не переводится; (so) that (+ may + inf.) (с повторением подлежащего главного предложения); in order that (+ may + inf.) (с таким же повторением; ср. выше)

он встал в шесть (часов), чтобы быть там вовремя — he got up at six (o'clock) (in order) to be there in time, или (so) that he might be, или in order that he might be, there in time

чтобы не — (in order) not (+ to inf.); (so) that ... not (+ may + inf.) (ср. выше); in order that ... not (+ may + inf.) (ср. выше); lest (+ should + inf.) (ср. выше)

он встал в шесть, чтобы не опоздать — he got up at six (in order) not to be late, или (so) that, или in order that, he might not be late, или lest he should be late

на том, о том и т. п. чтобы — on, of, etc. (+ ger.)

он настаивает на том, чтобы (им) пойти туда — he insists on (their) going there

без того, чтобы не — without (+ ger.)

он не может написать ни строчки без того, чтобы не сделать ошибки — he can't write a line without making a mistake
